Colca canyon tour from Puno to Arequipa

(4 reviews)

Overview

The Colca Canyon is one of the most striking natural wonders in southern Peru, counted among the deepest canyons on Earth and a must-see destination for travelers exploring the Arequipa region. Carved over millions of years by the Colca River, the canyon cuts through volcanic rock and terraced valleys that have shaped life in this part of the Andes for centuries.
The journey into the canyon crosses the high Andean plains, where herds of vicuñas graze freely and flamingos rest in scattered highland lagoons, all set against a backdrop of snow-capped volcanoes. These wide open landscapes offer some of the most dramatic scenery in the country, long before the canyon itself comes into view.
One of the main highlights of any visit to Colca Canyon is the chance to see the Andean condor in flight, the largest flying bird in the world, gliding over cliffs that drop more than a thousand meters in some sections. Few sights in Peru compare to watching these birds ride the thermal currents above the canyon walls.
Beyond its geology and wildlife, Colca Valley is home to traditional Andean communities who still farm pre-Incan and Incan terraces carved into the mountainsides generations ago. Towns like Chivay and Yanque preserve this heritage closely, alongside natural thermal baths and colonial-era churches that reflect centuries of cultural layering in the region.
Whether visited on a day trip or as part of a longer route through southern Peru, Colca Canyon rewards travelers with a rare combination of nature, culture, and adventure that few destinations in the Andes can match.

What to Bring for a Colca Canyon Tour?

Packing right can make a real difference on your Colca Canyon tour. The route climbs above 3,600 meters, and mornings start cold while afternoons warm up quickly once the sun is out. A few smart choices before leaving Arequipa will keep you comfortable the whole way.
Temperatures swing fast here, especially around Cruz del Cóndor early in the morning, so layering is key. Below is a simple checklist to help you prepare for your Colca Canyon tour without overpacking.

  • Warm jacket or fleece (mornings can drop close to 0°C)
  • Light, breathable layers for daytime
  • Comfortable closed shoes
  • Sunhat or cap
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen (high altitude sun is strong even when it feels cool)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Small daypack
  • Cash in soles (small towns like Chivay and Yanque have limited card access)
  • Original passport or ID
  • Basic altitude sickness medication or coca leaves/candy
  • Camera or phone with extra battery (cold drains batteries faster)
  • Swimsuit (if visiting the La Calera hot springs in Chivay)
  • Light gloves and a beanie for early morning stops

Itinerary

Day 1: Bus from Puno to Chivay

The Colca Canyon Tour from Puno begins at 6:15 AM with a transfer to the bus terminal to board the bus to Chivay, traveling across the endless highland plains covered by "ichu," a type of straw adapted to high altitudes.
We gradually ascend and cross the western Andes, stopping at a high lookout point to see Lagunillas Lagoon and observe rare Andean birds, including the giant Andean coot and the Andean goose.
At Pampa Cañahuas, we'll spot vicuñas, a wild Andean camelid, before continuing to another high pass at 4,950 meters known as the Volcanoes Lookout, just before descending into Colca Valley.
Arrival in Chivay is at around 12:00 PM, followed by a transfer to your selected hotel, where you can have lunch on your own at the hotel or one of the restaurants around the main square.
At 4:00 PM, your guide will pick you up for a well-deserved visit to La Calera thermal baths — bringing a swimsuit is recommended, though rentals are available on-site.
In the evening, enjoy dinner accompanied by a folkloric show. Travelers staying at the exclusive Colca Lodge, located near Yanque, may stay there instead to enjoy private thermal waters and excellent facilities, including a spa and a warm pool.

Day 2: Cruz del Condor & Arequipa

After breakfast, your guide will pick you up at 6:15 AM to visit the Cruz del Condor lookout, one of the best viewpoints to take in the canyon's impressive depth, stretching nearly 1,200 meters below, and to watch the spectacular flight of the Andean condor — on days with favorable thermal air currents, many condors can be seen soaring through the canyon.
On the way back, we'll stop in the communities of Maca and Yanque to admire their charming colonial churches, with snow-capped glaciers visible in the distance.
At the Choquetico and Antahuille lookouts, you'll see impressive Incan and pre-Incan terracing systems covering sections of the valley, and your guide will also show you ancient lithic models that reveal the advanced hydraulic engineering of past civilizations.
Back in Chivay's main square, enjoy lunch before departing for Arequipa. The scenic drive continues through the highlands, with arrival in Arequipa at approximately 5:15 PM.
Arequipa offers plenty of accommodation options near the main square, and in the evening, you're free to explore this beautiful colonial city on your own and enjoy its renowned local cuisine at one of the recommended Arequipa restaurants.
