Overview
This Pallay Punchu tour from Puno to Cusco departs Puno no later than 7:00 AM, since covering the full route with hiking time takes around 11 hours. The private vehicle heads out across the altiplano, retracing the Cusco–Puno road in reverse toward the Layo district, home to Pallay Punchu.
Along the way, the group stops at La Raya mountain pass (4,335 m) — the highest point on the route — for a box lunch, with open views of the Vilcanota valley and the snow-capped Chimboya range.
From La Raya, the drive continues toward Layo, at the edge of Langui Lagoon, where the trailhead begins. A moderate hike of about 45 minutes to an hour climbs toward the viewpoint at 4,790 meters, with the mountain's poncho-like stripes opening up against the highland sky and alpacas and llamas grazing along the trail.
After taking in the views and photographing the ridge, the group descends back to the vehicle for the final stretch to Cusco, with arrival scheduled by 6:00 PM.
